MAYOR GIULIANI HONORS COMMANDING OFFICERS AND SAILORS PARTICIPATING IN THE 11th ANNUAL FLEET WEEK
-- Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Miele Sworn In As Rear Admiral -
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today welcomed military officers and personnel to City Hall and proclaimed May 20-26 "Fleet Week" in New York City as the City's celebration of the 11th Annual Fleet Week continued. In addition, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Joel A. Miele Sr., P.E. was sworn in as Rear Admiral in New York's Naval Militia by Commanding Officer, Rear Admiral Robert A. Rosen of the New York State Naval Militia.
"Fleet Week is a time for remembering our history and traditions," said Mayor Giuliani. "It's a time to honor and remember the brave members of the military, and salute their devotion to duty. And now, during this year's celebration, we have an historic opportunity to reflect on the critical role that women have played in the military over the course of our nation's history. As a result of the tireless efforts and unwavering dedication of women in the military we are increasingly becoming a society in which people are judged by the content of their character, not by their gender - or, for that matter, by their skin color, background, religion, or age.
"New York City is very proud to be host to all five branches of the Armed Forces and representatives from all over the world, including the United Kingdom, Canada and the Netherlands during this week-long celebration," the Mayor continued. "On behalf of all New Yorkers I want to thank the men and women who now serve, and those who have served, in our country's Armed Forces for their hard-work and untiring efforts to protect the rights and freedoms of all Americans," the Mayor concluded.
The Mayor was joined at today's ceremonies by Secretary of the Department of the Navy John H. Dalton, Intrepid Museum Foundation Chairman of the Board Zachary Fisher, President and CEO of the Intrepid Air and Space Museum General Donald R. Gardner, Fleet Week '98 Chairman and President and CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald Howard Lutnick, Office of Veterans Affairs Director Michael Handy, Speaker Peter Vallone and Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington.
