MAYOR GIULIANI "UNBUCKLES SEATBELT" TO OPEN THE 98TH ANNUAL NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani unbuckled a giant seatbelt to open the 98th Annual New York International Auto Show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center today. With more than 1,000 vehicles on display the New York International Auto Show is expected to attract more than one million visitors from April 11th through April 19th and is expected to have a total one-time economic impact on New York City of $133.5 million.

"At the turn of the 21st Century New York City continues to be the place where people come to challenge themselves and put their creative visions and new ideas to the test," said Mayor Giuliani. "That explains why New York City has been such a fitting backdrop for the International Auto Show for close to 100 years. It's fascinating to see the new approaches taken by the industry's most innovative designers and engineers. This show gives us a window into the future, what New Yorkers will be driving out of the show room next year and what New Yorkers will be driving in the next millennium."

At today's opening ceremonies the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association (GNYADA) and the NFD Foundation for Diabetes presented a $15,000 check to Camp Nejeda Camp Director Valerie Wedder-Miller to provide children with diabetes the opportunity to attend Camp Nejeda, a camp for children with diabetes, this summer. The donation was made in memory of Todd Saslow the son of GNYADA Director Donald Saslow who passed away as a result of diabetes.

The Mayor was joined by New York Auto Show (NYAS) Chairman John LaSorsa, NYAS Director Candida Romanelli, GNYADA President Gary Schimmerling, GNYADA Executive Vice-President Mark Schienberg, GNYADA Director Donald Saslow, NFD Foundation For Diabetes (NFD) President Joe Flaherty, NFD Treasurer Tony Marrano, past NFD President Sam Fusco, HOT-97 DJ Ed Lover and New York City Parks Commissioner Henry Stern.
