MAYOR GIULIANI AND POLICE COMMISSIONER SAFIR ANNOUNCE NEW PAY INCENTIVE PLAN FOR NYPD PATROL OFFICERS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Police Commissioner Howard Safir today announced a plan to recognize New York City police officers who perform their duties with sustained dedication and commitment. Under this program, approximately two thousand members of the New York City Police Department in the rank of patrol officer will be designated Police Officer-Special Assignment. With this designation comes a pay differential of approximately $1,400.

Individuals selected for this Special Assignment designation would be drawn only from officers presently performing patrol duties within the Patrol, Housing and Transportation Bureaus. This designation will acknowledge and reward officers who are consistently evaluated as high achievers in their field commands. It will also encourage experienced officers to remain in patrol assignments. Consideration for this designation will be reviewed annually.

"This is a category of assignment differential that has been previously negotiated with the police union," Mayor Giuliani said. "It is a way of rewarding those police officers who continue to go that extra mile. We are keenly aware of the services performed by the members of the City's uniformed forces as well as those of our civilian employees. The entire City of New York benefits from their untiring efforts. We are pleased to extend this special designation to the police officers whose daily involvement with the citizens of New York has had a salutary effect on the quality of life in this City."

Police Commissioner Safir said, "The vast majority of the public's contact with the NYPD is with the men and women assigned to field commands -- primarily Patrol, Housing and Transportation. The Special Assignment designation will underscore the value of this important interaction. Implementing this program is an affirmation of the NYPD's commitment to reward police officers who perform in an exemplary manner and serve their communities with Courtesy, Professionalism and Respect."
