MAYOR GIULIANI AND POLICE COMMISSIONER SAFIR ANNOUNCE STEPPED UP ENFORCEMENT OF TRAFFIC LAWS

The Mayor and Police Commissioner Warn New Yorkers of Stepped Up Enforcement Beginning Tomorrow

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Police Commissioner Howard Safir today alerted City motorists that starting tomorrow the Police Department will step up traffic enforcement throughout the City, targeting motorists who speed and those who run red lights and stop signs. The program is part of Mayor Giuliani's recently announced quality of life campaign outlined in his speech The Next Phase of Quality of Life: Creating a More Civil City, delivered on February 25 at Lincoln Center.

"Over the last five years, the quality of life for all New Yorkers has improved dramatically," Mayor Giuliani said. "Today, the Police Commissioner and I are unveiling a new quality of life program designed to put the brakes on unsafe drivers. Beginning tomorrow, we will increase our enforcement efforts that target reckless motorists. Teams of police officers, armed with radar guns, will hit the streets to enforce the 30- mile-per-hour speed limit on all City streets and stop motorists who run through red lights and stop signs.

"By targeting reckless drivers, we hope to make our streets even that much safer," the Mayor continued. "So today we are putting all motorists on notice. If you run a red light or drive too fast, the New York City Police Department will be there to ticket and possibly arrest you."

Police Commissioner Safir said, "Over the past four years, we have made New York the safest large city in America, by reducing crime drastically. We have also made significant progress in traffic safety. Traffic fatalities are already down compared to last year. Nevertheless, we believe that we can improve that record and make the streets even safer for pedestrians and motorists."

The Mayor and Police Commissioner stressed that this program will take place in all five boroughs.
