MAYOR GIULIANI RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT CONCERNING THE DEATH OF FORMER NEW YORK POST EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR ERIC BREINDEL:

"I am deeply saddened by the death of Eric Breindel. It is a great loss to the City of New York. Eric was a very close friend, and someone whom I admired and loved. He possessed a unique understanding of all that makes up the City of New York. He had a particular insight into the challenges faced by New York City police officers and, even when there might be a media frenzy seeking to unfairly accuse police officers, Eric was often one of the few who courageously stood up for them. As a result of his dedication to the Police Department, in 1994 the Shields made Eric 'Man of the Year.' As he did often, Eric brought his father with him and both expressed their deep appreciation for the award.

"When Eric wasn't talking or writing about City, national or world politics, he would often tell the story of his parents, his family and the love that he had for all of those around him. I join the many New Yorkers who were fortunate to know Eric. He was one of the City's most talented writers who had keen insight, intelligence and unusual common sense."
