MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS COUNCIL BILL NO. 86, DESIGNATING KOREAN WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL PLACE IN STATEN ISLAND
REMARKS BY MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI AT PUBLIC HEARING ON LOCAL LAW
The bill before me today is Introductory Number 86, sponsored by Council Members O'Donovan, Michels, Povman, Pinkett and six of their colleagues. This bill designates the section of Milford Drive, between the intersection of Milford Drive and Ocean Terrace, and the intersection of Milford Drive, Ocean Terrace and Witteman Place in Staten Island, as Korean War Veterans Memorial Place.
On May 18, 1996, a "Korean War Veterans Memorial" plaque was dedicated at Milford Drive and Ocean Terrace on Staten Island. The memorial honors all United States Korean War Veterans, the 54,000 American soldiers who were killed in the conflict, and the more than 8,000 prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action who have not been accounted for. The war which has been termed the "Forgotten War", was fought between 1950 and 1953, and claimed the lives of at least 34 Staten Island residents.
The City of New York wishes to further honor these New Yorkers and all Korean War participants for their service to our country, by designating the street adjacent to the "Korean War Veterans Memorial" as "Korean War Veterans Memorial Place."
For reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
