MAYOR GIULIANI HOSTS LUNAR NEW YEAR RECEPTION AT GRACIE MANSION
Celebrates The Year Of The Tiger - 4696 - With New York's Asian CommunityMayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight welcomed members of New York City's Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communities to Gracie Mansion where he held a reception in celebration of the Lunar New Year. This year the Lunar New Year -- 4696 -- fell on January 28 and is being celebrated as The Year of the Tiger.
"This is the most joyous time of the year for over a half-million New Yorkers," Mayor Giuliani said. "And because of the major cultural influence of Chinese-Americans, Korean-Americans, Vietnamese-Americans and other on New York City, the spirit of this celebration now reaches people of all backgrounds in all corners of the City.
"The Lunar New Year is unique because it looks both to the future and the past, merging optimism and hope with a wonderful respect for tradition, and a deep belief in the continuity of time. It's a celebration of history, heritage, and an eager anticipation of what the coming year may bring.
"I was born in the year of the monkey, and I'm told that this year, caution is key for me," the mayor continued. "This, of course, is the Year of the Tiger. The tiger is one of the most courageous and intelligent animals, strong and graceful at the same time. Its beauty has captivated people across the world for thousands of years. This year let us aspire to live with the same strength, grace and beauty as the tiger."
The Mayor was joined at the reception by Angie Tang, Executive Director of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs and Language Services, James Chin, Chair of the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals, and Dewey Fong, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the New York City Police Department's Patrol Bureau Queens North. www.ci.nyc.ny.us
