MAYOR GIULIANI DELIVERS REMARKS AT 14th ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE AND AWARDS BREAKFAST OF THE RIVERDALE JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL

EVENT HONORS COMMUNITY SERVICE AND AFFILIATION IN THE BRONX

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined members of the Bronx Jewish community to honor four members and organizations for outstanding community service at the 14th Annual Legislative and Awards Breakfast of the Riverdale Jewish Community Council in the Bronx. The Council represents all major Jewish organizations in the Riverdale area. Awardees at today's event were Howard Jonas and the Riverdale Jewish Women's Forum (Jewish Community Service Awards), Rabbi Shlomo Balter (The Second Annual Community Builder Award) and New York City Fire Department (The 14th Annual Interfaith Brotherhood Award).

"I am proud to be here today to honor the commitment and dedication of the Riverdale Jewish Community Council and its honorees," the Mayor said. "It's no secret that over the past four years, New York City has dramatically turned around. Our streets are safer, our schools are improving, our sidewalks and parks are cleaner, and our cultural institutions are thriving. Tourism is booming, businesses are investing in New York City at unprecedented levels, and thousands of private sector jobs have been created. While there is no debate that the City turned around, there is some discussion about what contributed to this change. Today, I think it is abundantly clear that the turnaround could not have happened without New Yorkers like today's honorees and groups like the Riverdale Jewish Community Council, who unite and inspire individuals to continually better themselves.

"For twenty years, the Jewish Community Council has been a powerful force in Riverdale. It is an institution that defines community service. I congratulate the Council and today's honorees -- Howard Jonas, the Jewish Women's Forum, Rabbi Shlomo Balter and our own New York City Fire Department -- for their strong commitment to serve and to persevere to keep people together."

Today's breakfast honored Howard Jonas, founder and CEO of IDT Corporation an Internet service and international telecommunications business; the Riverdale Jewish Women's Forum, an alliance of Orthodox Conservative and Reform Jewish women; Rabbi Shlomo Balter, of the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale; and the New York City Fire Department.

Again this year, a portion of the breakfast was devoted to presentations on topics of Jewish interest and also as a forum for local legislators.
