MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS "MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WEEK"

Commemorating 70th Birthday of Religious and Civil Rights Leader

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Week" in New York City. The proclamation was presented to the Caribbean American Center of New York during a reception at the Tweed Gallery in Lower Manhattan.

Joining the Mayor for the birthday celebration of the civil rights leader were Deputy Mayors Rudy Washington and Ninfa Segarra, First Deputy Commissioner for Business Services Deborah Weeks and Caribbean American Center Executive Director Jean Alexander.

"Today, as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we are inspired by his message of love and non-violence," Mayor Giuliani said. "His teachings inspired a generation of Americans to peacefully fight for freedom and equality and, indeed, throughout the world, many have adopted his doctrine of non-violence and won their freedom as well.

"Though he was taken from us before his life's work was done, his impact on the civil rights movement is immeasurable," the Mayor continued. "Thanks to Dr. King's legacy, we live in a better world and for that we are very grateful. The City of New York owes him a debt of gratitude. He taught us that when we are a divided City, we are our weakest, but when we are together as one City, there is no limit to our strength," concluded the Mayor.

The Mayor presented the proclamation to Jean Alexander "in recognition of the excellent work of the Caribbean American Center in reasserting the value of immigration and helping to bring New York City together."
