MAYOR GIULIANI ASKS NEW YORKERS TO ASSIST ECUADORIAN FLOOD VICTIMS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, Ecuadorian Deputy Consul General Dr. Gonzalo Andrade and Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra today appealed to New Yorkers and members of the New York business community to donate critically needed supplies to assist "El Nino" flood victims in Ecuador.

The Mayor was also joined at today's press conference by Pfizer Inc. Manager of State Corporate Affairs Karen Boykin-Towns, Health and Hospitals Corporation President Dr. Luis Marcos, and Office of Emergency Management Director Jerome M. Hauer, who will coordinate the City's relief efforts.

The flooding, which began last October, is expected to continue until this April with the most damage expected to occur next month. The flooding has already claimed the lives of 80 people, injured 500 and left 13,000 temporarily homeless. In addition, the flooding has caused $500 million in damage to the country's food supply and property. Ecuador's infrastructure has been decimated and the water supply has been severely compromised by disease spreading contaminants.

"I'm asking New Yorkers to help our neighbors who are in dire need of canned and non-perishable food items, bottled water, blankets and money," said Mayor Giuliani. "We can ease some of the ongoing damage done by "El Nino" as we did in September, when we provided assistance to Mexico after Hurricane Pauline. New Yorkers have a defining characteristic of being compassionate. Whenever help is needed, New Yorkers, and the New York business communities, are always willing to lend a hand.

"I also want to thank the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and Pfizer Inc. for contributing pharmaceuticals and medical equipment critical to the recovery of the men, women and children of Ecuador," the Mayor concluded.

New York City's involvement in providing assistance coincides with the Grand Artistic Marathon radio broadcast, which can be heard here in New York City, as well as in Ecuador, this Sunday, January 11 from Noon to 9 PM. The radio marathon, which will be held at the Holy Rosary School at 444 East 119th Street in East Harlem, will feature Ecuadorian celebrities and is sponsored by the Ecuadorian Consul General, the Ecuadorian Civic Committee and other community-based organizations.

Donations can be dropped off only on this Sunday, January 11, at the following locations between Noon and 9 PM:

Financial donations can be made out to "Relief for Victims" and can be dropped off at the above sites or mailed to The Chase Manhattan Bank, New York, NY (account number #2925001461, routing number #021-000-021.)
