MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH CABLEVISION TO REFUND MORE THAN $2.2 MILLION TO CABLEVISION SUBSCRIBERS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DOITT) Commissioner Ralph Balzano today announced an agreement with Cablevision to refund more than $2.2 million and to provide one free month of premium channel service to Cablevision subscribers. The agreement is part of the resolution from an outstanding cable rate dispute negotiated with Cablevision, which operates two cable franchises in the Bronx and Brooklyn, respectively.

"I am pleased to announce the City has reached an agreement with Cablevision that gives substantial refunds to Cablevision's approximately 500,000 customers," the Mayor said.

Commissioner Balzano added that Cablevision subscribers will receive a $4 credit on their cable bills for a total savings of approximately $2 million and that all basic service only customers will receive a lower rate, starting in April 1998, worth more than $280,000 in savings.

In addition, the agreement includes a provision that all Cablevision subscribers will receive a free month of the Disney Channel or Cinemax, a premium channel service that otherwise costs subscribers $10 per month. Subscribers who already receive both premium channels will be offered two free Pay Per View (PPV) movies. The total value to Cablevision subscribers of this full month of premium service is $5 million.

The agreement stems from the City's original allegation that Cablevision overcharged subscribers by up to $2.5 million. Cablevision denied any overcharges.
