MAYOR GIULIANI CELEBRATES OPENING OF NEW MEN'S RETAIL STORE DURING RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY IN HARLEM'S PLAZA NINE

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today celebrated the opening of Executive Fashions, a high-end men's fashion retail store in Harlem's Plaza Nine, located on 125th Street between Malcolm X Boulevard and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard.

Executive Fashions, which will occupy two stores in Plaza Nine and provide 12 jobs, signed a ten-year lease with the City for 2,432 square-feet of retail space, bringing the total number of commercial tenants in the Plaza to three. Other tenants include Blockbuster Video (two stores) and Tourkara Massamakan, an African import and export store. Three other commercial spaces are available for lease.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) assumed management of the Plaza Nine retail stores and garage from the Harlem Urban Development Corporation (HUDC) on May 30, 1996. This past March the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) was completed, which allowed EDC to move forward in seeking tenants for the stores.

"The opening of Executive Fashions is another example of the renewed confidence in the business community on 125th Street, as well as the rest of Harlem," said Mayor Giuliani. "More and more businesses are realizing the advantages of doing business in this thriving and historic neighborhood. Companies are confident about investing in Harlem, and as a result, it has become one of hottest areas for development in the City."

Deputy Mayor For Community Development and Business Services Rudy Washington said, "By working together, the City and the 125th Street Business Improvement District have made full use of this retail complex, created jobs in the area, and found a tenant that will provide much needed goods and services in an underestimated neighborhood."

Executive Fashions is a subsidiary of MGM Clothing, a high-end men's fashion retailer. The Harlem store has a computer tracking system that monitors customers' buying habits and a sales team that outfits and delivers anywhere in the Tri-State area. "We are delighted to have the opportunity to open Executive Fashions in Harlem," said Executive Fashions President Thomas C. Garrett, Jr. "The renaissance taking place here virtually ensures success. We look forward to serving not only the Harlem community, but surrounding areas as well."

EDC President Charles Millard said, "The opening of Executive Fashions brings more jobs to the community, as well as more retail options. Under the Mayor's leadership, we have been able to attract more and more companies like Executive Fashions to Harlem due to the area's improved quality of life, reduced crime rate and lower taxes."

Space is currently available in Plaza Nine for three remaining storefront areas. For more information, call (212) 312-3894 or write to the New York City Economic Development Corporation, 110 William Street, New York, NY 10038.

EDC is the City's primary vehicle for economic development services. Using its real estate and financial resources, EDC helps develop businesses and create jobs throughout the five boroughs

The Mayor was joined at today's ceremony by Deputy Mayor for Community Development and Business Services Rudy Washington, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Planning and Administration Randy Levine, Department of Business Services Commissioner Earl Andrews, Economic Development Corporation President Charles Millard, 125th Street Business Improvement District President Joseph Searles III, 125th Street Business Improvement District Executive Director Barbara Askins, Executive Fashions Owner and Partner Thomas C. Garrett Jr., and Executive Fashions executives Kurien Thomas and Abe Mathews.
