MAYOR GIULIANI SALUTES NYC CAB DRIVERS ON TAXI CAB APPRECIATION DAY

MAYOR SERVES CAB DRIVERS FREE DOUGHNUTS AND COFFEE AT GRAND OPENING OF UPPER WEST SIDE KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUT SHOP

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani this morning served cab drivers free doughnuts and coffee in honor of "Taxi Cab Appreciation Day" at the grand opening of the Krispy Kreme Doughnuts shop on West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue. The Mayor joined Krispy Kreme owners Mel, Russell and Howard Lev and Taxi and Limousine Chairperson Diane McGrath-McKechnie for the morning's festivities.

"New York City taxi drivers keep this City on the move," the Mayor said. "So it's only fitting that we set aside one day to show our appreciation for their hard work and continuing efforts to improve the industry and overall service. 'Taxi Cab Appreciation Day' recognizes the service we get from more than 40,000 cabbies throughout the City. And from now until 9 am, all cab drivers can get door-to-door service -- with free doughnuts and coffee delivered right to the car door."

The Mayor continued, "I also want to congratulate Krispy Kreme on its grand opening - the fourth shop to open in New York City since June, 1996. I also commend them on their efforts to give something back to the community and the taxi cab industry."

"Doughnuts and coffee are synonymous with New York and so are taxi cabs," said Howard Lev, President of Harem Foods, Inc., and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. "We have been serving cab drivers since we opened our first store in Chelsea early last year. Now it is our turn to say thanks as we celebrate the opening of our fourth location in New York. I would like to thank the City for the support we have received in making sure all cab drivers can drive by to get their doughnuts and coffee and get back on the job quickly."

Harem Foods Company Inc. opened its first Krispy Kreme store in New York in June, 1996. The company currently owns and operates franchises on 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue, 125th Street, Penn Station in the Amtrak Rotunda, and a concession stand on the 8th floor of Macy's Herald Square.
