MAYOR GIULIANI OPENS NEWLY RENOVATED STATEN ISLAND CITY OFFICE BUILDING

130 Stuyvesant Place Will Alleviate Overcrowding in Richmond County Courthouse

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today officially opened 130 Stuyvesant Place, a newly renovated nine-story City office building that will provide Staten Island with additional office space for City agencies and new juror facilities to the Richmond County Courthouse. The facility will provide additional space for the Office of Court Administration, the County Clerk, the District Attorney's office and several City agencies, including the Department of City Planning, the Department of Probation and the Law Department.

Joining the Mayor at this afternoon's ribbon-cutting ceremony were Judith S. Kaye, Chief Judge of the State of New York, Jonathan Lippman, the Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York, Guy Molinari, Borough President of Staten Island, and William J. Diamond, the Commissioner of the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.

"It is a pleasure to be here today because this project is another important step forward for St. George, for Staten Island and for the New York City Court system," Mayor Giuliani said. "The City took over and renovated this building two years ago with two things in mind, alleviating overcrowding in the courts and providing additional space for the Clerk and District Attorney's office. Today, we can look at 130 Stuyvesant Place and say that, inside and out, this is the kind of workplace that judicial and City employees deserve and the members of the public need.

"The renovation of 130 Stuyvesant Place will also free up valuable space in the Richmond County Supreme Court," the Mayor continued. "I appreciate the work of each and every contributor to this project. Once again, you have proven the City's ability to complete important projects on time. I want to than the Department of Citywide Administrative Services for a job well done. I also want to thank Borough President Molinari for yet another successful collaboration that is making a lasting impression to the people of Staten Island."

Borough President Guy Molinari said, "The people of Staten Island are delighted with this important new building. By relocating many court administrative offices into 130 Stuyvesant Place, a significant amount of space will be freed up to build new, much needed courtrooms in the Richmond County Courthouse."

Judith S. Kaye, Chief Judge of the State of New York said, "We are very pleased with the renovation of 130 Stuyvesant Place. We are especially delighted by the spacious and pleasant facilities for jurors. Jurors are the foundation of our legal system, and it is so important that facilities for jurors reflect their important role. We also commend the City on how quickly it completed this major project. This opening marks an auspicious start to the City's Court Plan for Staten Island."

Jonathan Lippman, Chief Administrative Judge of the State of New York, said, "The opening of 130 Stuyvesant Place is an important milestone in the implementation of the Court Plan for Staten Island. The building provides more spacious facilities for a number of court related offices, including the County Clerk's juror operation, and the Supreme Court Library, which is the only public access law library in Richmond County. But just as important, the opening of 130 Stuyvesant Place frees up space in the Richmond County Supreme Court, so that much-needed courtrooms can be added in that historic building."

Commissioner William J. Diamond said, "The Department of Citywide Administrative Services is proud to have played a role in the reconstruction of this beautiful building. The completion of these new office and court facilities fulfill an important promise made by both Mayor Giuliani and Borough President Molinari to the people of Staten Island to not only relieve court overcrowding, but to also bring new office space which will add to the revitalization of the St. George area."

Since acquiring the building in 1995, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services has undertaken a full scale, massive renovation and rehabilitation of the structure in four phases. During the first phase, the interior of the building was completely gutted and all asbestos was removed. Next, the entire existing curtain wall on the building's west facade was removed and replaced, as were the windows. All the building's systems were rehabilitated and brought up to current codes.
