STATEMENT BY MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI REGARDING GOVERNOR PATAKI'S VETO OF THE INDEPENDENT HEARING OFFICER BILL

"We are pleased that Governor Pataki vetoed this bill that would have seriously undermined the Police Department's current disciplinary process. The system currently in place fully protects the due process of police officers while also ensuring that the Department can effectively discipline officers who engage in misconduct. The bill would have infringed upon the collective bargaining process between the City and its employees under current law. We thank the Governor for his courageous action in the face of tremendous pressure from special interest groups."
