MAYOR GIULIANI DELIVERS PROCLAMATION AT THE OPENING NIGHT OF THE 1997 RADIO CITY CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR
THE CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR "KICKS" ITS 65th SEASON INTO HIGH GEAR
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight attended the opening performance of The Radio City Christmas Spectacular and delivered a proclamation honoring the famous "staple" of the Christmas season and its longrunning performance record at Radio City Music Hall. Declaring it "Christmas Comes to New York Day," the Mayor said the show's arrival has officially kicked off the holiday season in New York City.
"Nowhere in the world is as festive as New York City during the holiday season, and since 1933, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular -- and the Radio City Rockettes -- have been a large part of the reason why," Mayor Giuliani said. "For more than six decades, performance after performance and generation after generation, the Christmas Spectacular has celebrated the holiday season with great flair, fashion and family fun. From the spirit of the Rockettes to the more than 1300 colorful costumes worn by cast members, the show is a New York City tradition."
"This year, over one million people from all 50 states and from throughout the world are expected to attend the show, making it the number one live show in America," the Mayor continued. "And it's a classic that is given new life and energy every year in this great historic theater. This spirited showcase truly exemplifies New York City as the Capital of the World and the Capital of Christmas celebrations."
"This is the year for families to rediscover and celebrate the greatest Christmas tradition in the world," says Arlen Kantarian, President and CEO of Radio City Productions. "If you have never seen The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, don't miss this exciting tradition, filled with the spirit and joy of the holiday season. If you have seen the show, then we have some wonderful new surprises for you this year!"
The Spectacular opens today and runs through January 4, 1998. The 250 members of the cast and crew perform up to six shows a day. Additions to this year's production include first-ever performances in Spanish on January 3rd and 4th in celebration of Three Kings Day. Over the years, new scenes such as "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Mr. & Mrs. Claus in Concert" have intertwined with favorite classics such as "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" and "The Living Nativity."
