MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS COUNCIL BILL NO. 907, NAMING "VINCENT GUIDICE PLACE" IN THE BRONX IN HONOR OF THE SLAIN POLICE HERO
REMARKS BY MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI AT PUBLIC HEARING ON LOCAL LAWS
The next bill before me, Introductory Number 907, sponsored by Council Members Eisland, Fusco and seven of their colleagues, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Police Officer Vincent Guidice Place" on West 236th Street, between Broadway and Kingsbridge Avenue, in the Bronx.
Police Officer Guidice was born on September 19, 1965 to Eileen and Vito Guidice. He graduated from North Rockland High School and from an early age expressed a desire to become a police officer. On June 30, 1992, Vincent Guidice's dream came true when he was sworn into the New York City Police Department. He was assigned to the 50th Precinct, where he developed a strong rapport with the community and was recognized for countless incidents of commendable police service.
Unfortunately, Police Officer Guidice will also be remembered for the tragic circumstances that ended his young life. On May 21, 1996, Police Officer Guidice and his partner responded to a domestic dispute call. Upon arrival, Police Officer Guidice attempted to protect a woman who was being attacked. As a struggle with the suspect ensued, Police Officer Guidice sustained a serious injury from which he died the next morning. Since his death, the New York City Police Department created "The Vincent Guidice Memorial Award for the Prevention of Family Violence" in his honor. He is survived by his parents, his brother Paul Quinn, and his fiancee, Geraldine Boyle.
Police Officer Vincent Guidice was the epitome of everything a police officer should be. Accordingly, in recognition of his sacrifice and heroism for the people of this City, this legislation names West 236th Street, between Broadway and Kingsbridge Avenue, near the entrance to the 50th Precinct as "Police Officer Vincent Guidice Place."
For the reasons previously stated I will now sign this bill.
