MAYOR GIULIANI JOINS SUNSET PARK PARADE OF FLAGS
Salutes Sunset Park's Ethnic Diversity and Community Pride
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today joined hundreds of marchers in the Annual Parade of Flags on Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The annual event, sponsored by the Sunset Park Restoration Project, brings together representatives from 50 nations in a colorful display of flags that reflects the community's ethnic diversity.
"I am proud to participate in this parade of ethnic and community pride," Mayor Giuliani said. "Each year this event grows in number and enthusiasm and this is symbollic of the important role that immigrants play in the cultural and economic development of our neighborhoods. Immigrants from all over the world continue to make significant contributions to Sunset Park and to the rest of the City."
The theme of this years' parade is "We are Proud of Who We are, Where We Come From and Where We Live Now." Marching bands, members of community civic and cultural organizations, churches and schools joined in the celebration.
The parade organizer, Sunset Park Restoration, is the oldest and largest all-volunteer civic group serving the 98,000 residents of the Sunset Park, Brooklyn neighborhood. Among the projects they have undertaken are library expansions, lead poison and air quality monitoring, tree pruning, pothole filling, repaving of streets and many other projects that improve the quality of life in the Sunset Park community.
