MAYOR GIULIANI ADDRESSES THE 19TH ANNUAL
HISPANIC ELDERLY CONFERENCE
Salutes Work of the "Institute for the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Edlerly"
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today addressed the 19th Annual Hispanic Elderly Conference at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. The Mayor praised the Institute for the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Elderly for the important role it continues to play on behalf of New York City's senior citizens.
"This conference and the work of the Institute provide invaluable services
to New York City's elderly community, " Mayor Giuliani said. "I thank Executive Director Suleika Drinane Cabrera for her leadership and dedication to providing senior New Yorkers with vital information and services.
"Services for our senior citizens have been a top priority of my adminis- tration and I thank the Institute for being a dedicated partner in this effort. Over the last four years, we have infused $25 million into our 335 senior centers and I believe that has been an excellent investment."
The Mayor added, "I am proud to have fought against the provisions of the federal welfare legislation that unfairly penalized legal immigrants, including many seniors. Older New Yorkers are vital members of our communities and we all share the same concerns--to create the strongest and most dynamic New York City possible, with opportunities for all."
The themes of this year's conference are "The Impact of New and Proposed Legislation on Social Security Benefits" and the "Importance of Volunteerism." The Institute for the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Elderly is the largest Hispanic non-profit organization serving the Latino and other minority seniors in New York City. Incorporated in 1979, it grew from a small two-contract provider to a 22-contract, citywide multi-service program.
