MAYOR GIULIANI ATTENDS COMMUNITY MAYORS OF NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY AND CONNECTICUT ANNUAL GALA DINNER
DELIVERS PROCLAMATION DECLARING "DOMINICK DELLA ROCCA DAY" IN HONOR OF ORGANIZATION'S FOUNDER AND "EXECUTIVE CHIEF MAYOR"
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight attended the Community Mayors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut's gala dinner and delivered a proclamation honoring the organization's founder and Executive Chief Mayor, Dominick Della Rocca, at the New York Hilton Hotel. The Mayor joined members of the all-volunteer charitable organization to celebrate this year's neighborhood improvement efforts and to toast this year's civic honoree for over forty years of leadership and community service that has enhanced the lives of children.
The organization brings together outstanding citizens from all walks of life who have a common bond: the willingness to help others. These civic-minded New Yorkers in all neighborhoods assumed the title "mayor" of their respective communities and include community and civic leaders in theatre, education, sports and business, among other areas. Mayor Giuliani has been a member since 1988.
"I am happy to join the Community Mayors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut tonight to celebrate a wonderful organization dedicated to providing programs for disadvantaged and physically challenged children," Mayor Giuliani said. "From Operation Santa Claus, which provides bus transportation for 8,000 physically challenged children to watch Santa arrive from the North Pole, to "A Day at the Circus" which gives 18,000 young people an opportunity to see "The Greatest Show on Earth," Community Mayors has provided over 3 million children with recreational activities."
"At the core of this community drive is a man we're honoring tonight: Executive Chief Mayor Dominick Della Rocca. In addition to more than 40 years of service as founder and Community Mayor, he also established the Buck Wingo Athletic League in Fort Greene to give young people an opportunity to play baseball, and the Fort Green Civic Center that develops programs for young people. Dominick serves as Director of Athletics for Brooklyn and Queens Youth Organization and is the Trustee of Camp Montebello for Blind Children. And, from one Mayor to another, I thank you for your community service."
The Community Mayors of New York State is an organization devoted to communal, charitable and civic activity. Founded more than 100 years ago as the Locality Mayors of Lower East Side of New York City, it has brought together everyone from outstanding everyday New Yorkers to John Wayne, Joan Crawford, Billy Martin, Mayor Abe Beame and Cardinal John O'Connor. In their efforts, community mindedness is the first prerequisite for membership.
