MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS COUNCIL BILL NO. 998, CREATING THE MONTAGUE BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT, THE CITY'S 41st BID

REMARKS BY MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI AT PUBLIC HEARING ON LOCAL LAWS

The bill before me today, Introductory Number 998, is sponsored at my request by Council Members Berman and Fisher. This legislation establishes the Montague Street Business Improvement District (BID) in the Brooklyn Heights section of downtown Brooklyn, making the City's 41st BID. The proposed Montague Street BID would include all properties fronting on Montague Street from Court Street on the east to 78 Montague Street on the west. The new BID would be managed by the Montague Street District Management Association, Inc., and will be operating with a first year budget of $108,000.

The Business Improvement District Program is a vital part of our neighborhood economic development efforts and remains an important tool for strengthening the commercial and industrial areas of the City. BIDs provide a high level of supplemental services that include local business promotion and marketing. We look forward to the success of this District and are confident that its efforts will complement other city economic development initiatives in Brooklyn.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
