MAYOR GIULIANI URGES NEW YORKERS TO VOTE "YES" ON SCHOOL BOND ACT REFERENDUM

Pledges to Work to Make Sure New York City Gets Its Fair Share

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today urged all New Yorkers to vote "YES" on the "School Facility Health and Safety Bond Act of 1997," a bond initiative on the ballot election Day, November 4th. If approved, the Bond Act will authorize $2.4 billion statewide to improve public schools. The Mayor pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that New York City receives its fair share of the total Bond Act funding.

"A YES vote on the Bond Act referendum is a vote for the future of our children," said Mayor Giuliani. "Over the past four years, this administration has worked hard to make sure that the one million New York City public school children have the proper tools to meet the challenges of the 21st century. By voting YES on this referendum, we can further ensure that vital capital dollars are available to improve the school infrastructure."

The Mayor continued, "These additional dollars will help Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew, the Board of Education and the School Construction Authority in their efforts to expedite and expand school construction, put additional computers in our classrooms, repair older public school facilities and build more space for our expanding population of students."

The Mayor thanked Governor George E. Pataki and the State Legislature for authorizing this Bond Act to appear on the November ballot. He assured New Yorkers that if the Act is passed, he will work hard to make sure that New York City receives its fair share of the available funds.

Mayor Giuliani will testify before the State Board of Regents in support of the Bond Act at hearings to be held on October 20 at City Hall.
