MAYOR GIULIANI'S HURRICANE TASK FORCE SENDS FIRST SHIPMENT
OF GOODS TO VICTIMS OF HURRICANE PAULINE IN MEXICO
Mayor Praises New Yorkers For Their Generous Support
Deputy Mayor for Education and Human Services Ninfa Segarra today joined Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen and Jerome Hauer, Director of the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) as the City of New York sent the first shipment of bottled water, non-perishable foods and blankets to the storm ravaged victims of Coastal Mexico.
This outpouring of support from New Yorkers to the tens of thousands of Mexicans left injured or homeless by Hurricane Pauline includes thousands of gallons of bottled water suitable for drinking and cooking. This shipment was prepared for delivery by the Fire Department which opened its firehouses to serve as collection points for the past week.
"Once again, New Yorkers have demonstrated their compassion and concern for those less fortunate," Mayor Giuliani said. "Their generosity exemplifies the character of this great City."
"Thousands of New Yorkers have generously responded to Mayor Giuliani's call to help those whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Pauline," said Deputy Mayor Segarra. "We thank those who have demonstrated their concern and donated bottled water, food and blankets. We also pray for those left destitute by this natural disaster, and hope that they are comforted by the concern of so many people throughout the world."
Fire Commissioner Von Essen said, "New Yorkers have shown their true concern for our neighbors in Mexico by this outpouring of support. Members of the Fire Department, who have collected donations at firehouses throughout the city, extend their thanks to the thousands who have offered their help to those in dire need, and join in the efforts by all concerned citizens to help those ravaged by this natural disaster."
"We want to particularly thank Aero Mexico for handling the difficult logistics involved in transporting this large shipment of necessities, which we hope will help ease the suffering endured by thousands of Mexican citizens," said Hauer. "Aero Mexico's efforts have made it possible for the generous donations of New Yorkers to be brought to those devastated by this disaster."
Mayor Giuliani convened the Hurricane Relief Task Force led by Deputy Mayor
Ninfa Segarra to assist the victims of Hurricane Pauline which hit the Mexican Coast last week
killing at least 200 people and leaving tens of thousands injured and homeless.
The Task Force urges New Yorkers to continue sending monetary donations to the American Red Cross. The number to call is 1-800-HELPNOW.
