MAYOR GIULIANI HOSTS RECEPTION FOR THE 28TH RUNNING
OF THE NEW YORK CITY MARATHON
-- Declares Sunday, November 2nd New York City Marathon Day --
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani this evening welcomed members of the New York Road Runners Club to Gracie Mansion to celebrate the 28th running of the New York City Marathon.
Joining the Mayor at the reception were New York City Parks Commissioner Henry Stern, New York Road Runners Club President Allan Steinfeld, New York City Sports Commission Director Arlene Weltman and representatives of the various New York City Marathon sponsors.
"I'm very excited that over 29,000 men and women will participate in this year's running of the 28th New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2nd," said Mayor Giuliani. "Runners from all 50 states and from over 100 countries will come to New York to participate in the largest annual marathon in the world. While some of the best runners in the world will run in this event, what's most remarkable is that a third of those participating will be running the Marathon for the first time.
"I want to thank the New York Road Runners Club for all it has done to make this race a quintessential New York City event, and for all it does year-round to serve the tens of thousands of New Yorkers who love to run. In recognition of these important contributions, I am proud to proclaim Sunday, November 2nd New York City Marathon Day," the Mayor concluded.
The New York City Marathon was founded by Fred Lebow in 1970, with 127 runners completing four laps around Central Park. Twenty-seven years later the 26.2 mile race winds through all five boroughs and includes over 29,000 runners. It is expected to draw over 2 million spectators and a television audience of 347 million in 150 countries. Last year's marathon had the largest female field in the history of the Marathon with 7,433 finishers. Anuta Catuna of Romania finished first for women with a time of 2:28:18 and Giacomo Leone of Italy finished first for the men with a time of 2:09:54.
