MAYOR GIULIANI RECOGNIZES BUSINESSES
WHO SUPPORTED THE YES COMMISSION
Last summer total of 52,047 jobs is a 31% increase over 1996
Representing Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at a City Hall ceremony, Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra recognized the private sector businesses which supported the Youth Empowerment Services Commission (YES) Summer Job Program. For 1997, the YES Commission surpassed their ambitious city-wide goal of 37,000 publicly funded jobs and 8,000 private unsubsidized jobs, securing a total of 52,047 jobs for the City's youth. The diversity of companies that delivered jobs included major cultural and educational institutions, financial firms, chain stores, small boutiques, law firms, hospitals and a theater company.
"The success of the YES Commission can be attributed to its intensive recruitment of a wide range of business and its facility in coordinating the efforts of its partners in summer youth employment," said Mayor Giuliani. "The YES Commission's lead in creating a unified city-wide effort to expand job opportunities for youth in the City will enable the success to continue in the future."
At today's ceremony, Deputy Mayor Segarra presented certificates of appreciation to all the companies which supported the YES Commission's 1997 effort. Bud Konheim, the CEO of Nicole Miller and this year's chairperson, was praised for his leadership by Deputy Mayor Segarra.
"The City commends YES Commission Chairman Bud Konheim. Under his leadership, the Commission staff began actively promoting summer job commitments throughout the business community early in 1997," said Deputy Mayor Segarra. "As a result, many companies who had not previously participated in summer employment pledged jobs this year. The theme for this year's effort was 'Do You remember Your First Job?' Clearly, New York City companies did and the result has been terrific!"
The YES Partners are: NYC Department of Employment, NYC Housing Authority, NYC Department of Business Services, NY State Department of Labor, NYC Partnership and Chamber of Commerce, The United Way of New York City and NYC Public Private Initiatives.
