MAYOR GIULIANI SENDS ELITE EMERGENCY
SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM TO PUERTO RICO
Unit will assess local civil defense agency emergency preparedness planning
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that the City's elite Emergency Search and Rescue Team is in Puerto Rico for a three-day assessment of the Island's emergency preparedness needs. The team, comprised of members of the New York City Police and Fire Departments and the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management Services, is in Puerto Rico in coordination with the Puerto Rico State Civil Defense agency.
Mayor Giuliani said, "This effort is another step toward developing closer ties between New York City and Puerto Rico's Civil Defense agency. This critical assessment will ensure that future relief efforts are executed professionally and proficiently."
Within the last few years, the City of New York has worked with the Government of Puerto Rico to provide disaster relief assistance in a number of emergency situations affecting the Island. In September 1996, Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra headed a team of the City's emergency medical, search and rescue personnel that traveled to the Island to provide aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Hortense.
Last November, the City's Search and Rescue Team was dispatched to Puerto Rico to assist local officials in the rescue operations after a devastating gas explosion rocked the Rio Piedras section of San Juan.
