MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS INTO LAW COUNCIL BILL NO. 1047, CREATING "AUDREA M. BLANCO WALK" IN BROOKLYN

Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The bill before me, Introductory Number 1047, sponsored by Council Members Robles, Albanese, Berman and 23 of their colleagues, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Aurea M. Blanco Walk" to Seigel Street between Manhattan Avenue and Graham Avenue (also known as Avenue of Puerto Rico) in Brooklyn.

Aurea Blanco was born Aurea Montanez in Puerto Rico on August 24, 1920. In 1945 she came to New York City as a single parent with her two sons, Antonio Esteban Robles and Victor Luis Robles, presently the third highest ranking member of the New York City Council. She later remarried and had two more children, Delores Celina Blanco and Ernesto Blanco, Jr.

Aurea became very active in her community, through volunteer efforts, helping with fund-raising and promoting a range of social activities. Her most important struggle was to bring better housing to the Williamsburg community.

In 1965 she was one of the original pioneers behind the construction of the Borinquen Plaza housing development and was instrumental in the formation of the development's tenants association, of which she served as Treasurer. She also served as President of the PTA of I.S. 49, and served from 1978 to the day of her death as the Secretary of the Borinquen Senior Citizens Center.

Her dedication and concern for her community made her a very effective community leader. Aurea Blanco died on March 2, 1995 at the age of 74. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. As a tribute to her memory it is fitting that Seigel Street between Manhattan Avenue and Graham Avenue/Avenue of Puerto Rico, in front of the Borinquen Senior Citizens Center, be named "Aurea M. Blanco Walk."

For the reasons previously stated I will now sign this bill.
