MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS COUNCIL BILL NO. 1013, NAMING "RICHARD TRUPKIN PLAZA" IN QUEENS

Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws

The bill before me, Introductory Number 1013, sponsored by Council Members McCaffrey, Marshall and six of their colleagues, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Richard Trupkin Plaza" at the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue, Skillman Avenue and 56th Street in Queens.

Richard Trupkin was born on November 1, 1932 in Brooklyn, where he attended P.S. 156 and Tilden High School before attending the New York School of Printing in Manhattan. At the age of 15, Richard Trupkin began working with Roseman Printing and during his tenure there, he married Marilyn Lehrer in 1952. In 1964 he established his own business, which was later known as Lamarr Printing and Offset, Inc., located on Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside.

But first and foremost, he was a civic activist and a man dedicated to the Woodside community. Among his accomplishments were the founding of the Kiwanis Club of Woodside in 1977, publishing a local newspaper called "The Woodsider," and founding the Woodside Volunteer Ambulance Corps in 1981. In addition, Mr. Trupkin sponsored food drives for the poor, and created a scholarship fund for needy youth.

Sadly, Richard Trupkin was murdered on the evening of Tuesday, December 17, 1996, while working at his shop. At the time of his death he was collecting used, stuffed animals to be cleaned, restored and delivered to orphan children at Bellevue Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his daughter, Barbara, and his son, Steven.

Richard Trupkin dedicated the last 30 years of his life to enhancing the quality of life in the Woodside community. Therefore, as a tribute to his life, it is fitting that the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue, Skillman Avenue and 56th Street in Queens be named "Richard Trupkin Plaza."

For the reasons previously stated I will now sign this bill.
