MAYOR GIULIANI FULFILLS A PROMISE: WASHINGTON IRVING
HIGH SCHOOL GETS HOME BASKETBALL COURT
MAYOR HOISTS CHAMPIONSHIP BANNER
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today hoisted the championship banner of the Washington Irving High School Boys' Basketball Team over its new regulation size basketball court. Following a City Hall photo opportunity earlier this year, the Mayor was informed the team did not have its own regulation size court -- preventing them from playing any home games. The Mayor promised to locate a gym for the team -- and within weeks, the Mayor made good on that promise.
The Mayor was joined by Commissioner Henry J. Stern and Community Assistance Unit Rosemarie C. O'Keefe.
"I met the Washington Irving High School Boys' basketball team earlier this year," Mayor Giuliani said. "When they said they were excited about being champions but they did not have a home court to play any home games, I knew they needed to have one. And now with the help of the Community Assistance Unit and the Parks Department, they will have a basketball court to call their own."
After the champions left City Hall, the Mayor immediately contacted the Community Assistance Unit who brought the Parks Department and Washington Irving High School together -- and the Alfred E. Smith Recreation Center was secured for the team's home games. The Boys and Girls' team will use the facility for their upcoming 1997-1998 season.
Last year, the Parks Department completed the renovation of the Smith recreation center. The facility, used mostly by children, is the home of many Lower Eastside after-school programs and various leagues.
