MAYOR GIULIANI ISSUES PROCLAMATION HONORING ECOFEST DAY IN NEW YORK CITY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed Sunday, September 28, "Ecofest Day" in New York City. Delivering the proclamation for the Mayor was Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro. The proclamation was part of an afternoon-long celebration of the environment at City Hall with everything from solar cars, electric, and natural-gas vehicles to Ecofest poster contest winner third-grader Emmanuel Acevedo. Joining the Deputy Mayor was Parks Commissioner Henry J. Stern.

"Ecofest is a terrific festival because it reminds us to be environmentally conscious," Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro said. "If you're interested in the environment, or if you're one of the 7.5 million New Yorkers who has a fundamental stake in the future of the planet, I encourage you to come out to enjoy the many events this Sunday."

The City currently uses almost 1500 compressed natural gas vehicles, which cut down on car emissions. The City's recycling program "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" is also an integral part of the City's pro-environment plan.

Deputy Mayor Mastro also presented an award to Emmanuel Acevedo, a public school third grader who won the Ecofest poster contest for 1997 beating out almost 500,000 other contestants and 35 finalists. Emmanuel's poster can be seen throughout the City promoting Ecofest.

Earlier, the Mayor expressed his gratitude to Ecofest organizers and singled out Nanci Callihan for her commitment and dedication to keeping the environment clean for future generations.

In its ninth year, Ecofest is celebrated this weekend at Riverside Park with a coordinated series of events, including the 5K walkathon Ecowalk '97, and a display of innovative alternative-energy technologies including solar car prototypes and electric and natural gas vehicles.

Sponsors include Con Edison, the New York Power Authority, Mistic Rainforest Nectars, Brita Water System, Toyota, Volvo, Noticias del Mundo, Time Warner Cable, NYC Department of Parks and Recreations, and Brooklyn Union Gas.

The contact number for Ecofest is (212) 580-7133.
