MAYOR GIULIANI AND CHANCELLOR CREW VISIT
BROOKLYN'S PS 279 AS STUDENTS BEGIN NEW SCHOOL YEAR
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Chancellor Rudolph F. Crew today visited students at Public School 279 - The Herbert Schreiber School - in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn as the new school year began in New York City. The Mayor and Chancellor toured the school with Principal Harriet Loren and read to students in one of the classrooms.
"The students, teachers and parents of PS 279 can be proud of the hard work and dedication that have made them one of the outstanding elementary schools in the City," Mayor Giuliani said. "For the past four years, PS 279 has maintained the top ranking in both reading and math scores within District 18 and was identified as one of the City's top 50 elementary schools in a recent magazine survey."
"It is important that the City continue to provide PS 279 and other schools in the system with the resources they need to continue to flourish," the Mayor continued. "Through Project Read and Project Smart Schools, we have made substantial financial commitments to upgrade reading programs and equip every school with the computers they need to prepare students for the future. We are also restoring art and music programs in the schools. PS 279 and every other school in the system will benefit from these important programs."
Chancellor Rudolph F. Crew said, "This school, and all the schools in our system, will greatly benefit this year from new initiatives such as Project Read and Project Arts. I believe this school year will be one of tremendous achievement on the part of our students."
In 1994, PS 279 was one of 10 schools in New York City to be selected for an Apple Computer "Partners in Education" grant, which helped the school utilize state of the art electronic teaching and learning techniques. PS 279 has 1168 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
