-- State Of The Art School Will Welcome 873 Students; Feature Computer Classrooms, Science Lab, Art & Music Rooms --
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Chancellor Rudolph F. Crew today cut a ceremonial ribbon to mark the opening of Primary School (P.S.) 24, a new $28 million state-of-the-art educational facility in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn that will accommodate 873 students and feature computer classrooms, and science, art and music rooms. Classes at the school, located at Fourth Avenue and 38th Street, will begin this Thursday, September 4.
Joining the Mayor and the Chancellor at today's ribbon cutting ceremony were Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden, Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra, Schools Construction Authority (SCA) Chair Howard Wilson, SCA President and CEO Martin Raab, City Council Members Priscilla Wooten and Joan McCabe, Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, Board of Education President Bill Thompson, P.S. 24 Principal Yvette Aguirre, District 15 Superintendent Frank DeStefano and Board of Trustees Representative Paul Atanasio.
"I'm proud to be here today to open this new elementary school that will provide our children with a great start as they begin their education in New York City," Mayor Giuliani said. "This sophisticated, state-of-the-art learning environment will provide 873 pre-kindergarten to fifth grade students with the tools they will need to compete and succeed in the 21st century.
"Primary School 24 is another example of our commitment to the children of New York City. It is important that we provide them with the resources and classrooms to prepare them for the future," the Mayor continued. "Through Project Read and Project Smart Schools, we have made substantial financial commitments to provide and restore a comprehensive arts and education curriculum. The children of Primary School 24 will all benefit from these programs."
The 873 desks at P.S. 24 are part of the 23,735 new seats that the Board of Education is adding to the public education system for the new school year through new construction, renovation and other expansion programs citywide.
Chancellor Crew said, "Today we inaugurate 873 of the 23,735 new seats we have created for our school children this year. Primary School 24 will be a wonderful resource not only for its students, but for teachers, parents, and the entire Sunset Park community."
Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden said, "This has been a long-awaited day for the people of Brooklyn. It's a great day for the people of
Sunset Park, especially our children. With the opening of P.S. 24 we reaffirm our
commitment to providing quality education to the young people of our Borough. I
want to thank everyone who played a role in making this day come to fruition and
look forward to seeing P.S. 24 and its children grow throughout the years."
The new air conditioned, 92,000 square-foot school, whose construction was managed by the New York City School Construction Authority, will accommodate 873 pre-kindergarten to fifth grade students. The school includes two pre-kindergarten, five kindergarten, ten first and second grade, five third grade, eight fourth grade and two special education classrooms. It will provide several special features and programs, including two computer classrooms, a science lab, an art room, a media complex, a community room and a library. In addition, there will be a 4,250 square-foot gymnasium, a 10,000 square-foot playground and a separate 3,000 square-foot Early Childhood Playground with playground equipment.
Schools Construction Chair Howard Wilson said, "P.S. 24 is an another example of the quality of schools being built by the City. The parents and children of Sunset Park should be excited with the completion of this beautiful 873-seat, fully computerized building. SCA will continue to build quality schools like P.S. 24 and will do so on time and within budget."
