MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES PUBLICATION OF 1997-1998 EDITION OF WOMEN'S ORGANIZATIONS: A NEW YORK CITY DIRECTORY

Annotated Directory Lists Women's Advocacy, Grassroots, Business
and Professional Groups in New York City

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced the release of the fifth edition of Women's Organizations: A New York City Directory. This annotated directory of women's groups in New York City (including city-based national organizations) contains nearly 450 entries listing advocacy, grassroots, business and professional groups in New York City.

"In this complex and diverse City, a resource that details the range of services and organizations available to women can be a very helpful tool," Mayor Giuliani said. "I commend Amalia Betanzos, Chair of the New York City Commission on the Status of Women, Executive Director Lynn Jackson Quinn and all the members and staff of the Commission for their important work in researching and compiling this unique and valuable resource."

Chair Betanzos said, "We encourage the use of this directory and urge organizations to continue working with us to advance the status of New York's women and girls. We are very proud of the efforts the Commission is making to ensure that women's voices are heard and that they have the information and resources to address their needs and aspirations."

The Directory, now in its fifth edition, provides updated listings for the nearly 450 groups throughout the five boroughs which work to improve the personal and professional lives of New York City's women and girls, including 100 groups which are new to this edition. It lists women's advocacy, grassroots, business and professional groups in New York City. It is a useful guide for working women, marketing directors, public relations professionals, the media, lawyers, reference librarians, personnel and EEO officers and social service professionals.

Also included in the directory is information on child care, counseling and referral, employment, health, political action, reproductive rights, sexual harassment and violence and physical safety. For the first time, this edition includes computer-based access information that is available for these organizations--including home pages and websites.

Ms. Jackson Quinn said, "At the Commission, we put our Directory into constant use providing women and women's organizations of New York with information and referrals to the varied programs and services available to them."

The New York City Commission on the Status of Women was established by a Mayoral Order in 1975 as a 40-member appointed advisory body to assess and improve the status of women in New York City. Through developing legislation and policy and providing educational and networking activities, the Commission serves as an advocate for women and girls and supports programs to remove barriers to the full participation of women in their personal and professional lives.

The Directory can be ordered through the NYC Commission on the Status of Women, 52 Chambers Street, Suite 209, New York, New York 10007. The Commission can also be reached by telephone at 212-788-2738, fax 212-788-3298 and by e-mail at CSW@mayorlan.nycnet. ci.nyc. ny.us
