MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES CREATION OF COLISEUM SITE ADVISORY PANEL

Panel Will Assist And Advise The Mayor Regarding MTA's Coliseum Site Redevelopment Proposal

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced the creation of a Coliseum Site Advisory Panel. The panel will facilitate the City's deliberations with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in its selection of a developer for the New York Coliseum site.

The Coliseum, which anchors the Southwest Corner of Central Park, is a critical link between three neighborhoods: the Upper West Side, Clinton and Midtown. In order to ensure that the selected development promotes the City's best long-term interests, including aesthetic, planning, and cultural interests, the Mayor has appointed a panel of eminent experts to serve as an advisor to the Mayor in assessing the proposed designs for the site and the public benefits of any cultural uses proposed for the development.

The panel will be comprised of: Jack L. Goldstein of The Actors' Equity Association and Community Board 5; Jaquelin T. Robertson, FAIA, AICP, a partner in the architecture and planning firm of Cooper, Robertson & Partners; and Andrew Heiskell, Chairman Emeritus of the New York Public Library and former Chairman of the Bryant Park Restoration Corporation and of Time, Inc.

Joseph B. Rose, the Chair of the City Planning Commission, and John Dyson, former Deputy Mayor and a City representative to the MTA Board, will serve as ex officio members of the panel. Mr. Rose will coordinate the efforts of the panel and ensure that the Department of City Planning provides all necessary assistance and expertise. Randy L. Levine, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Planning and Administration, will oversee the work of the panel and will assist and advise the Mayor in reviewing the MTA's Coliseum site redevelopment proposal.
