MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS MENSWEAR DAY
IN "FASHION CAPITAL OF THE WORLD"

Acknowledges Importance of Men's Fashion in New York City

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani joined representatives of the world's fashion industry today at the Collective, one of the premier upscale men's fashion exhibitions in North America, to proclaim Menswear Day in New York City. The proclamation was delivered at a cocktail party on the Show Piers on the Hudson in Manhattan, where the Collective is being held.

The Mayor was joined by Elyse Kroll, President of ENK Magazine; Tom Florio, President of the New Yorker Magazine; President of the Collective Barry Bricken; Senior Deputy Commissioner of the Italian Trade Commission Gaspare Asaro; Karen Alberg, Editor-in-Chief of MR Magazine; and Bloomingdales Fashion Director Holly Adam.

"The apparel industry has long been woven into New York City's history," Mayor Giuliani said. "From the Eastern European immigrant manufacturers at the turn of the century to the recent land-rush among international designers to open flagship stores, the fashion industry is and always has been an integral part of the tapestry of New York City. New York City's role in the arena of fashion design is unmatched in the world. For this reason, New York City has naturally been dubbed, 'the Fashion Capital of the World'.

"New York City has always been known as a center of creative energy and vitality, and now we are also becoming known as the world's best place to do business," the Mayor continued. "In making the City safer and cleaner than it has been in decades, by enacting more tax reductions than in the prior 18 years combined, we have worked together to attract more businesses to the Fashion District.

"The Collective's debut at the Show Piers on the Hudson is an important centerpiece in showcasing men's fashion to the world. In the backdrop of New York City's magnificent skyline, 250 of the world's top designers will exhibit their work from the convenience of this new modern location," concluded the Mayor.

The Collective brings together Italian, Portuguese, British and German trade commissions; men's fashion presidents and CEOs of fashion businesses from all around the world; men's fashion designers; fashion, lifestyle, news, business and marketing press. The event also included major retail executives from all over the country with an emphasis on New York City representatives including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf, Bloomingdales, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein.

For the first time, the 250 designers participating at the Collective are presenting their collections in a booth format at the new New York Show Piers on the Hudson, set against the New York City skyline. The move to the large venue is the result of overwhelming demand from the industry for an efficient, elegant location that can accommodate its ever increasing international scope.

Two other menswear shows, The New York Menswear Show and Eurostyle, are running concurrently with the Collective in New York City. The New York Menswear Show also provides seminars and other events besides fashion exhibition, and presents grants and scholarships to students preparing to enter the field of menswear design.

A special segment of Gianni Versace's collection will be shown at the Collective in a memorial to the late designer.
