MAYOR GIULIANI INDUCTS SUSAN WATTS AS NEW YORK PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani issued the oath of office to Susan Watts, who was sworn in this evening as the first ever woman president of the New York Press Photographers Association.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the 21 Club, Mayor Giuliani said, "It is my pleasure to be with you this evening as we celebrate the induction of Susan Watts as the first woman president of the New York Press Photographers Association. Journalism has come a long way in New York City since the early days of your organization; technology has improved immeasurably and so has the scope and scale of daily papers.

"But some things remain the same: New York City is still the newspaper capital of the world, with more newspapers than any other city in America. And the New York Press Photographers Association is still at the vanguard of photojournalism. With Susan Watts at the helm, we can be sure that photojournalism will continue to develop and thrive in this exciting time," the Mayor concluded.

Ms. Watts graduated from New York University in 1991 with a degree in filmmaking. She has worked for the Daily News for four years, first on a freelance basis and then as a staff photographer. She has also done photography for Life Magazine and U.S. News and World Report. She has been honored for her work by both the New York and the National Press Photographers Club.

The New York Press Photographers Club was established in 1915 by a group of photographers drawn from all of the City's newspapers, wire services and syndicates. It was created so that photographers could meet, socialize, and exchange ideas. It is the oldest press photographers association in the country, and its membership includes five Pulitzer Prize Winners.
