MAYOR GIULIANI CONGRATULATES QUEENS SURFACE CORPORATION ON 60 YEARS OF QUALITY BUS SERVICE FOR QUEENS RESIDENTS

COMPANY IS INTEGRAL PART OF ONE CITY, ONE FARE

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani traveled to Queens today to congratulate the Queens Surface Corporation for providing 60 years of quality service to New York City bus riders. The Mayor joined Queens Surface Corporation President Robert J. Burke and several hundred employees at a company picnic celebrating the anniversary at the College Point Athletics Fields in College Point, Queens.

"I am proud to be here today to congratulate the Queens Surface Corporation whose long history in providing bus service continues to this day," Mayor Giuliani said. "In 1937, Fiorello LaGuardia attended the inaugural ceremony and welcomed this new company to Queens as he ushered in a new vision for the City with a transportation network to match a growing economy. Sixty years later, LaGuardia's vision has come full circle, as transportation systems continue to spur our economic vitality. I want to thank the company executives for displaying a commitment to service and leadership."

"One City, One Fare is a major milestone in New York City's transportation history and is an important step in creating an integrated mass transit system," said Mayor Giuliani. "The establishment of free bus-subway transfers for City-subsidized franchise bus companies, like Queens Surface, is a significant part of this achievement. This historic development will help to encourage future economic opportunities throughout the five boroughs," he concluded.

"I want to thank Mayor Giuliani for including private bus franchises in One City, One Fare. Without his efforts, companies like Queens Surface would not have been included," said company President Robert Burke.

Queens Surface Corporation, based in Flushing, is the largest privately owned transit company in New York City and one of the ten largest in North America. The company provides express bus service from Queens to Manhattan and local service in Queens to over 80,000 daily riders and employs more than 700 people at its headquarters. It will soon open a new clean fuel bus depot in College Point.

Founded in January 26, 1937, in a franchise agreement between Queens/Nassau Transit Lines, Inc. and the City of New York, the company was granted permission to maintain and operate motor omnibuses on certain routes in Queens. Since then the company has received over a dozen honors, including the New York Cares Award and the Transit Authority Emerald Society Award.
