MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS LEGISLATION CREATING "MANUEL MAYI, JR. CORNER" IN QUEENS

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 946, sponsored by Council Members Marshall and Abel, would add the name "Manuel Mayi, Jr. Corner," on the northeast corner at the intersection of 108th Street and 36th Avenue, in Queens.

Manuel Mayi, Jr. was born on October 14, 1972 in Brooklyn to Altagracia and Manuel Mayi, immigrants from the Dominican Republic. When the family moved to Queens he attended P.S. 149 and P.S. 145, where he was an excellent student and was well liked by students and teachers. He later graduated from Newtown High School, and enrolled at Queens College, with a desire to become an engineer. His life was cut short at the age of eighteen on March 29, 1991, when he was chased by three youths and brutally beaten to death on the northeast corner of 108th Street and 36th Avenue in Corona, Queens.

As a symbol of the merits of non-violence, understanding and love in a multi-ethnic community, it is fitting that the northeast corner at the intersection of 108th Street and 36th Avenue be named "Manuel Mayi Jr. Corner."

I will first turn to the bill's sponsors and then to any other elected official wishing to be heard.

There being no one else to be heard, and for the reasons stated previously, I will now sign this bill.
