MAYOR GIULIANI OPENS SECOND ANNUAL

NEW YORK CITY VENTURE CAPITAL CONFERENCE

BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS MEET TO EXPLORE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN NEW YORK CITY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani opened the Second Annual New York City Venture Capital Conference today as part of his continuing program to promote business growth and investment in New York City. More than 25 companies in new media, biotechnology and other emerging industries were selected to present their products to investors during the two-day Conference sponsored in part by the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

"Investors are noticing that New York City is home to some of the most dynamic new companies in the country," said Mayor Giuliani. "In 1996, venture capital investment rose 41 percent in the City. From new media to telecommunications, New York City is at the forefront of emerging industries, and this conference is an ideal opportunity to showcase some of our best startup companies. Currently small businesses account for almost 75 percent of all new private sector jobs."

Following last year's conference more than half of the presenters received inquiries from investors. This year over 80 companies requested the opportunity to present at the Conference and the 25 companies selected represent some of the most innovative businesses in the City today.

"This Conference will highlight the advantages of investing in New York City companies," said Randy Levine, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, Planning and Administration. "Investors will learn about the success the Giuliani Administration has had in working with the private sector to foster economic growth throughout the City."

Charles Millard, President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, said, "We are confident that this event will help venture capitalists and entrepreneurs form critical partnerships and take advantage of the opportunities that are now arising in a thriving New York City. Under the leadership of Mayor Giuliani, New York City is a revitalized city with a business environment conducive to the growth and success of small businesses."

This year, the Conference will feature key speakers from many premier companies and associations including NASDAQ, New York Now, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The Conference will also include sessions on conducting business in New York City, with seminars on "Raising Capital in New York City" and "New Media Growth in New York City."

The Conference is co-sponsored by the City of New York; Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison LLP, one of the leading law firms in the United States; Coopers & Lybrand, LLP, an international accounting and consulting firm; Prospect Street Investment Management Company, the manager of more than $285 million of institutional capital; and Strategic Research Institute, a leader in the conference and meeting industry.

The Conference will be held at the New York Hilton, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. tomorrow. For further information on the Conference contact the Strategic Research Institute at 212-302-1800.

The Economic Development Corporation is the City's primary vehicle for economic development services. Using its real estate and financing resources, EDC helps develop businesses and create jobs throughout the five boroughs.
