MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS "BRONX DOMINICAN PARADE WEEK"

Acknowledges Dominican Achievements and Contributions to New York City

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed "Bronx Dominican Parade Week" in New York City and acknowledged the many contributions made by Dominicans to the City of New York. The proclamation was presented to Parade President Felipe Febles during a ceremony at City Hall. Also in attendance were members of the parade's Board of Directors and other distinguished members of the Dominican Community.

"I am delighted to salute the seventh annual Bronx Dominican Parade organizers as they pay tribute to their cultural heritage and promote the unity and advancement of Dominicans in New York City," Mayor Giuliani said. "As New York City's Dominican community pauses to reflect on its past and prepares for its future, the entire City should recognize the contributions Dominican men and women have made to our society.

"Dominicans came to this City and built their lives as part of a minority community sometimes without a strong support network. Today, they have flourished into a vibrant community that contributes significantly to every profession, every business and to every field of endeavor," the Mayor added.

Parade President Febles said, "I thank Mayor Giuliani for his continued support of the Bronx Dominican Parade and our efforts to promote our culture and heritage. This year we are proud to dedicate the parade to our Dominican youth. They are our hope for the future and we want to encourage them to strive for excellence and advancement. I take this opportunity to extend an invitation to everyone to join us at the parade on Sunday, July 20th, and celebrate our Dominican pride."

The seventh annual Bronx Dominican Parade will be held on Sunday, July 20th, along the Grand Concourse in The Bronx.

This year the parade celebrates the 153rd anniversary of the independence of the Dominican Republic and honors Juan Pablo Duarte, a hero and patriot who led the movement for independence with the patriotic slogan "Dios, Tierra y Libertad" (God, Country and Liberty.)
