MAYOR GIULIANI HONORS EDWARD R. MURROW HIGH SCHOOL CHESS TEAM ON ITS EIGHTH CITY CHAMPIONSHIP

At a City Hall ceremony today, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani honored the Edward R. Murrow High School Chess Team, which won its eighth New York City High School Chess Championship.

Sponsored by the United States Chess Federation, the competition was held on January, 1997 at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Students from 50 schools throughout the metropolitan area --both public and private -- participated. The team has also won five state championships and three consecutive national chess titles -- 1992, 1993 and 1994. The School is currently raising funds to attend the national championship in Tennessee later this year.

"I want to congratulate these fine students today for their impressive record of success," said Mayor Giuliani. "All New Yorkers are proud of them and of the enthusiasm, self-discipline, and tremendous concentration they have displayed. I also commend Principal Saul Bruckner, Chess Team Coach Elliot Weiss, teachers, and parents at the Edward R. Murrow High School for the leadership and support that made it possible for these students to bring honor to their school, their community and to the City of New York," concluded the Mayor.

The Edward R. Murrow High School Chess team's members are: Elina Groberman, the winner of the 1996 New York State Women's Championship; Lily Faerman, the top female high school chess player in New York City; Ryan Chorney, who won the Right Move Tournament; Boris Fridkin, who finished third in the Kiev Open White Rook Tournament; Ella Vandalovskaya, who finished second in the Odessa Chess Club Tournament; Jonathan Silverman, who finished as the best novice high school chess player in New York City; Gleb Tsipurskiy, selected as a strong, persistent player; Leo Lipovetsky, Lev Feldman, and Anthony Golbin.
