MAYOR GIULIANI LAUNCHES SUMMER JOBS FOR YOUTH CAMPAIGN

Sets Goal of 45,000 Summer Jobs

Prospective Employers Asked to "Remember Your First Job!"

City Hall - Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, joined by Deputy Mayor for Education and Human Services Ninfa Segarra and Nicole Miller CEO, Bud Konheim, Chair of the Commission on Youth Empowerment Services (YES Commission), today launched a campaign to provide 45,000 summer jobs for New York City's young people.

"Remember Your First Job!" is the theme of an integrated publicity campaign which includes public service announcements urging the business sector to say "yes" to young people aged 14 to 21 by giving them jobs this summer.

"My administration has made improving the lives of our children a top priority," Mayor Giuliani said. "But government cannot do it alone. Helping our youth is a shared responsibility. Everyone with a stake in the future of our City also has a stake in the development of our youth. I want to express my appreciation to Bud Konheim, Deputy Mayor Segarra and the members of the YES Commission for their commitment to New York City's youth. I remember my first job as a newspaper delivery boy and how much I learned about work and responsibility."

Mayor Giuliani added, "I take this opportunity to thank those Business Improvement Districts and businesses that have already responded with summer jobs. Some of these companies are United Parcel Service, the GAP, Alliance for Downtown New York, KFC and the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District ."

Also joining the Mayor during the announcement were: Schools Chancellor Rudolph F. Crew; Councilmember Victor Robles, Chair of the Committee on Youth Services; top fashion designer Nicole Miller; Co-chair of the NYC Partnership's Summer Jobs Campaign, Paula Gavin; New York Post General Manager Dick Hawkes; United Way of New York City President Ralph Dickerson; Madison Avenue BID Executive Director Alex Kabbaz; and NYS Department of Labor Regional Director Edward Garvey.

Chancellor Crew said, "Every young person needs the chance to hold a job and learn the skills that are necessary for success. A summer job is often the first step in that important direction, giving students the opportunity to develop the dedication and responsibility demanded by the work-a-day world. I echo Mayor Giuliani's appreciation of the YES Commission for making this program happen."

"I remember how much my first job as a camp counselor meant to me," said Deputy Mayor Segarra. "A first job is a most important experience in a young person's life. I am confident that the partnership of the private, public and not-for-profit sectors will help us meet our goal of 45,000 summer jobs."

Chairman Konheim, who is the CEO of Nicole Miller fashion company, is leading the efforts to involve the private sector in creating jobs. Under his guidance, Commission members are actively promoting summer job commitments and are working closely with the Business Improvement Districts, local development corporations and Chambers of Commerce in the five boroughs.

Chairman Konheim said, "The future of our workforce is in our own hands. The Nicole Miller Company has made a commitment that 12% of our summer jobs will go to hiring YES Commission kids. I see it as a great investment in our City's future workforce and I challenge businesses throughout New York City to make a similar investment."

As part of the outreach efforts, public service announcements will appear in local papers. Radio and television spots will begin airing later this month.

The radio and television ads were produced by Crosswalks Television and the newspaper ad was created by the Economic Development Corporation. The New York Post generously donated advertising space. Prospective employers interested in providing summer jobs for City kids should call 212-788-6700

Under the leadership of Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra, the YES Commission will continue to coordinate the NYC public sector efforts for summer youth employment.

The Mayor's Commission on Youth Empowerment Services (YES Commission) was created by Mayor Giuliani on March 14, 1996 to coordinate the resources of the public, private and not-for-profit sectors in order to maximize the youth employment opportunities available in New York City.

The Commission works in collaboration with the United Way of New York City, the New York City Partnership and Chamber of Commerce, the New York City Department of Business Services, the New York State Department of Labor, the New York City Department of Employment, the New York City Housing Authority and New York City Public/Private Initiatives.
