MAYOR GIULIANI ATTENDS OPENING DAY CEREMONY FOR THE 94TH PRECINCT'S STEVEN McDONALD ROOKIE BASEBALL LEAGUE
Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today delivered remarks at the Opening Day Ceremony for the 94th Precinct's Steven McDonald Rookie Baseball League in Brooklyn. The Mayor was joined by Police Commissioner Howard Safir; League Founder, Steven McDonald; League Coordinator, Donald T. Marshall, and more than 100 Little League participants between the ages of 6 and 12.
After the Opening Day Parade, Mayor Giuliani threw out the first pitch, which officially began the League's 11th season.
"I want to thank the members of the P.A.L. 94th Precinct Steven McDonald Rookie Baseball League for their great service to the children of New York City," said Mayor Giuliani. "For the past 11 years, they have provided the children in their community with a variety of sports-related activities that contribute to a healthy environment for these youngsters to grow up in.
"Sports are a source of enjoyment, physical endurance, and the development of team spirit and fair competition among our youngsters. All these things are contributing factors to achieving success in their education and to growing up as productive citizens. As I see all these children today walking happily toward the ball park, it is my deepest wish to see all New York City children walk toward bright futures full of job opportunities, safety, and hope. That is the commitment of my administration," concluded the Mayor.
The P.A.L. 94th Precinct Steven McDonald Rookie Baseball League, a not-for-profit organization staffed by volunteers, has brought baseball and softball to hundreds of children in the Greenpoint/Williamsburg's section in Brooklyn, through the support of parents and the community.
