STATEMENT BY MAYOR RUDOLPH W. GIULIANI
This evening the City of New York was informed that Attorney General Janet Reno had determined that the recent legislation enacted by the State Legislature giving new powers to New York City Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew does not violate any provisions of the Federal Voting Rights Act. Mayor Giuliani released the following statement in response to the decision:
"This represents a real victory for the children of New York City. Now the Chancellor can continue to put the interests of children ahead of the political considerations of others who use the system for their own gain. This is a vote of confidence in the Chancellor's leadership and for reform of the school system. I want to thank Attorney General Reno for taking a personal interest in this case because it means so much to the education of our City's children."
