Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today presided over the Community Mayors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut's annual "Day at the Circus" in association with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus at Madison Square Garden's Paramount Theatre.
"Both the Community Mayors and the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus have been delighting New York's children for many years," said Mayor Giuliani. "By combining their efforts today with a terrific show, these two New York traditions have given a tremendous gift to some of our City's neediest youngsters."
Also participating in the ceremonies were actress/singer Leslie Uggams, First Deputy Police Commissioner Tosano Simonetti, Fire Commissioner Tom Von Essen, Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty and Taxi and Limousine Chairperson Diane McGrath-McKechnie.
The Community Mayors Children's Fund is a non-political, not-for-profit organization made up of community and business leaders who provide recreational therapy for disabled and physically challenged children. Each year, the mayors sponsor a series of events benefiting more than 80,000 children, a great many of whom are wheelchair bound.
