MAYOR GIULIANI ATTENDS 'LIONEL'S NIGHT OF COMEDY'
BENEFIT FOR THE POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani attended "Lionel's Night of Comedy" tonight at Caroline's Comedy Club which will benefit the programs of the Police Athletic League (PAL). Joining the Mayor and WABC radio personality Lionel were Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, John Ryan, Executive Director of the PAL, Donald Trump, and some up and coming stars of stand-up comedy. The benefit was sponsored by WABC Radio.

"It is a pleasure to join tonight in an evening of outstanding comedy that also benefits an outstanding cause, the Police Athletic League," Mayor Giuliani said. "If not for the PAL, many young New Yorkers would have no organized recreational opportunities in their communities. 'Lionel's Night of Comedy' is a terrific event to benefit this very worthwhile organization, and our master of ceremonies is a man who has become an unofficial spokesperson and patron for the PAL. He hosts New York's second favorite radio show -- I can't recall who hosts the number one show, but I think it's called 'Live From City Hall.' I want to thank Lionel and the comedians gathered here tonight. Their involvement with the PAL demonstrates their love and affection for the children of this City."

A portion of proceeds from Lionel's recently released CD, "You Don't Look Like You Sound," is being donated to the PAL. In addition to Lionel, tonight's featured comedians included:
Judy Gold, featured on All American Girl, HBO Comedy Special, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno;
Angela La Greca, the winner of the 1995 and 1996 MAC Awards for Outstanding Musical Comedy;
Dr. Peter Bales, featured on Caroline's Comedy Hour and Comic Strip Live;
Gabe Abelson, a writer for the Late Show with David Letterman;
Tony Powell, featured on Showtime at the Apollo and A&E's Comedy on the Road;
Al Romero, featured on Evening at the Improv and Star Search;
and Adrianne Tolsch, featured on the Comedy Club Network and Spotlight Cafe.

The Police Athletic League is New York City's largest, independent youth organization. Founded in 1914, PAL serves 60,000 New York City boys and girls each year with recreational, educational, cultural and social programs. This last summer, PAL conducted summer programs in 190 neighborhoods throughout the City, serving 25,000 young men and women aged 3 to 21. The PAL is the official youth agency of the New York Police Department.
