MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS ITALIAN HERITAGE AND CULTURE MONTH

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed October 1996, as Italian Heritage and Culture Month at a Gracie Mansion reception recognizing the contributions Italians have made to the life of New York City, the nation and Western civilization. The Mayor presented the proclamation to Dr. Angelo Gimondo, Chairman of the Board and Founder of Italian Heritage and Culture Month, who accepted it on behalf of New York City's Italian-American community.

"From the Northern and Southern regions of this relatively small country came much of the great art and culture of Western civilization," Mayor Giuliani said. "During October, we celebrate the wonderful influence that Italians and Italian Americans have had in all areas of our City. From inventions to explorations, the history of America is entwined inextricably with the deeds of Italians who came to the New World in search of opportunity, adventure and freedom.

"America is a nation of immigrants and in New York, more than anywhere, the new dreams, new ideas and new vitality of immigrant communities have developed and continue to develop our city. In the spirit of Italy's rich heritage and culture, we celebrate the achievements and work of Italians and Italian-Americans, who, by virtue of their vision, wisdom and knowledge have greatly contributed to the growth of this nation. Events like Italian Heritage and Culture Month give us all an opportunity to celebrate our Italian heritage, and to highlight Italian contributions to our city," the Mayor concluded.

Italy's Consul General Franco Mistretta was also at the celebration and presented Deputy Mayor for Operations Randy Mastro with the "Cavaliere Ufficiale Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy" medal, in recognition of his new position.

Today's celebration marks the 20th anniversary of Italian Heritage Month and Culture in New York City. This year's theme is 'Italy and its Regions - L'Italia delle Regioni.' The reception was sponsored by various restaurants and corporations.
