Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani's Statement Regarding Those
Who Unlawfully Enter the Yankee Stadium Playing Field
"In light of the unlawful actions of a few individuals at the first two World Series games, I want to send a clear message to those who might be thinking of disrupting the remaining games. In the future, anyone who unlawfully enters the playing field during the remaining World Series games at Yankee Stadium will be arrested and charged with the misdemeanor of criminal trespass which carries a maximum of 90 days in jail and a $500 fine, and with any other appropriate crimes.
"With regard to the incidents which occurred during the first two games of the World Series, those who entered the field were taken into custody by the New York City Police Department and were issued summonses to appear in criminal court for a violation offense. This court appearance could expose them to the maximum penalty of 15 days in jail and a $250 fine. The Police Commissioner is reviewing each of the cases to determine whether the individuals should be arrested and charged with a misdemeanor. We are also working with the Bronx DA to determine whether we can proceed on more serious charges against these individuals.
"In addition, anyone who breaks the law by throwing objects at the players or onto the field will also be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
"When fans and players go to Yankee Stadium, they have the right to expect that they will be able to enjoy the game in safety and without disruption."
