MAYOR GIULIANI AND NEW YORK STATE CONFERENCE OF MAYORS URGE PASSAGE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL BOND ACT

Call Passage Key To Future Economic & Environmental Progress; Praise Governor Pataki's Leadership On The Issue.

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani joined Mayors from around New York State today at Gracie Mansion to urge passage of Governor Pataki's 1996 Environmental Bond Act which will appear on the ballot on Election Day, Tuesday, November 5. The officials were at Gracie Mansion to attend a brunch reception for the New York State Conference of Mayors which is holding its annual meeting in New York City.

"I am pleased to join with Mayor Clyde Rabideau of Plattsburgh and other Mayors from around the Empire State in urging New Yorkers to go to the polls on November 5 and support Governor Pataki's Environmental Bond Act," Mayor Giuliani said. "Once approved by the voters, the proceeds from the Bond Act will help to safeguard our air and water, but also ensure future economic growth and build on the progress we've made to keep New York an attractive place to live and work.. Of particular benefit to the City of New York under this Act is the $125 million earmarked for the replacement of coal burning furnaces in our school buildings and the $75 million that is dedicated to the closure of the Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island. In proposing the Bond Act, Governor Pataki has demonstrated strong leadership and a vision for the future of our State."

"We are delighted to be here at Gracie Mansion today to join with Mayor Giuliani to send a strong message of support for Governor Pataki's Environmental Bond Act," said Plattsburgh Mayor Clyde Rabideau, who is President of the New York State Conference of Mayors. "The passage of the Bond Act is crucial to the environmental and economic future of New York. It's good for upstate New York and it's good for downstate New York. That 's why we're here to speak with one voice: on November 5, vote yes for the Environmental Bond Act." The $l.75 billion Bond Act has also been endorsed by every major environmental organization in the State, business groups, including the Business Council of New York State, labor organizations and the New York State Association of Towns.

Under the Bond Act, $790 million will go to the Clean Water Program, $355 million for the Safe Water Drinking Program, $175 million for Solid Waste initiatives, $200 million for Municipal Environmental Restoration projects and $230 million for Air Quality projects.
