ENCOURAGES NEW YORKERS TO VOLUNTEER THIS SATURDAY TO GIVE CITY'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS A "FACE LIFT"
City Hall - Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced New York Cares Day 1996 and encouraged New Yorkers to volunteer to give New York City public schools a major face lift. On Saturday, October 19th, concerned volunteers will spend the day reorganizing libraries, painting murals and fences, fixing equipment, clearing garbage and refurbishing gardens at one hundred public schools throughout the five boroughs.
Joining the Mayor in a Blue Room announcement were Kathy Behrens, Executive Director of New York Cares, Jeff Susman, Director of New York Cares Day and Christiana Allaire, Vice President of Deutsche Morgan Greenfell, the event's leading corporate sponsor. Founded in 1987, New York Cares is a volunteer corps of thousands of concerned New Yorkers eager to improve their communities.
"I am delighted to join New York Cares and congratulate the parents, children, educators, sponsors and the thousands of volunteers who share a common desire to improve our City's public schools and their surrounding neighborhoods," said Mayor Giuliani. "This is an example of how community organizations such as New York Cares and the private sector can work together to improve conditions in government programs like the public school system."
The Mayor encouraged New Yorkers to call 212-598-5800 to volunteer.
Kathy Behrens said, "We are honored to once again have the strong cooperation and support of Mayor Giuliani, his administration and the Board of Education as we prepare to mobilize 8,000 New Yorkers to help spruce-up our public schools. We are proud to help our city and hope that even more New Yorkers hear this call and turn out this Saturday."
New York Cares Day will begin with a ceremony on Saturday, October 19th at 8 a.m. at Bryant Park in Manhattan. Organized teams of volunteers will be sent off to the schools they will be working on. Volunteers will also raise money for their day of service to support the thousands of New York Cares year-round volunteer programs. New York Cares Day will finish with a thank-you party for the volunteers at Roseland in Manhattan.
